This Weekend in 1942, ‘Pride of the Yankees‘ was directed by Sam Wood, and starring Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Walter Brennan, Dan Duryea and Babe Ruth. It received 11 Academy Award nominations. Gehrig died on June 2, 1941. The film premiered on July 14, 1942 in New York City at the Astor Theatre, and was shown for one night only at “forty neighborhood theatres.” Preceding the film was the premiere of an animated short called “How to Play Baseball,” produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios at Samuel Goldwyn’s request, the producer of the film. The Pride of the Yankees was the 7th-highest grossing film of 1942, with $8.08 million in box office receipts. Despite its wide popularity, RKO took a loss of $213,000 on the film due to the small distribution fee that Samuel Goldwyn had negotiated with the studio. All of Goldwyn’s pictures produced a loss for RKO no matter how much money they took in; but the studio considered the arrangement acceptable, because its association with Goldwyn lent prestige to RKO, and enhanced sales of its own movies.

This weekend in 1942, ‘Sleepy Lagoon‘ Harry James and His Orchestra. The James recording was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 36549. It first reached the Billboard Best Seller chart on 17 April 1942 and lasted 18 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 1.

Instagram has 500 million users. 88% of Twitter users are on mobile. An average of 500 million tweets are sent every day with 320 million active users. Twitter had 9 million new members sign up in Q1 2017. The Google+1 button is hit 5 billion times per day. 80% of Internet users on Pinterest are female.

Pinterest has 110 million monthly active users. LinkedIn has 347 million registered members with 100 million active users. Tumblr has 555 million users and Weibo has 100 million daily users. Skype has 300 milllion active users and there are 1.000 billion users on Whatsapp. With 900 million active users on Facebook Messenger, 60 billion messages are sent via Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp every day. Netflix now has 75 million streaming subscribers. QQ has 853 million active users. WeChat has 697 million active users while QZone has 640 million. Facebook is wooing business-to-business marketers with a ‘Discover Growth‘ push, which includes one ad each day on Instagram, Facebook and its Audience Network. Video lead spots and link ads will urge marketers to sign up to get advice on how to grow their brand using Facebook, and will be supported by print and digital ads in industry publications. The on-platform portion of the campaign will deliver one ad per day on Facebook, Instagram and the Audience Network with relevant direct response data and insights. Ads will be a mix of video lead and links ads, where marketers can choose to sign up to learn more or click through to the campaign landing page going live Wednesday. “People are spending more time and consuming more information on mobile than ever before, and it has changed the way people discover, engage with and purchase from a business,” said Michelle Klein, North America marketing director for Facebook. “As a result, there is no longer a ‘moment of truth’ in the customer journey. The purchase cycle has been completely turned on its head and ‘the moment’ happens at any point in time. That’s why Facebook is launching the ‘Discover Growth‘ campaign, to help marketers and agencies tap into these shifts in consumer behavior to grow their business, particularly as they prepare for the busiest retail period of the year this coming holiday season.”

Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.

Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Google Feed Debuts Today (Wednesday)
Google is working with the highly personal nature of mobile devices to develop search results sensitive to a user’s location and preferences. The offering, which makes its US debut today, is called Google Feed and, unlike Facebook’s News Feed, is keyed to the individual user rather than friends.

According to David Ingram of Reuters (07.19.17), Google announced an overhaul of its search app on mobile phones to include a personalized feed of links about hobbies, travel, sports and other topics, a move that puts the search company into more direct competition with social networks such as Facebook. While rolling out in the U.S. Wednesday, it will begin to be rolled out in other countries in a few weeks.

The company said it wanted to create another place to see a stream of relevant search results. “This feed is really about your interests … It’s not really about what your friends are interested in,” Ben Gomes, a Google vice president for engineering, said in a briefing with reporters. There were no immediate plans to include advertising in Google Feed, Gomes said.

Google Feed will suggest links based on a user’s Google search history as well as data from other Google services, such as YouTube, Gmail and Google Calendar, the company said.
