Why ‘American Idol’ Is Repositioning ABC

Many pendants in the media business have trashed ABC for its investment in re-tooling ‘American Idol’. They attack the oldness of one of the stars, bash the host, rip into the only female star of the show and consider the country host not relevant. But what they don’t know is what the program is doing for ABC on Sundays, let alone Mondays.

First, Sundays is a whole new ballgame since ‘Idol’ debuted this season on ABC. It has lifted the ‘Alphabet Network’ to new highs on a night it really needed assistance. Last year it was in trouble of staying out of the basement. This year, as it did this past Sunday, it succeeded in jumping up to a solid #2 with the network generating 5.930 million viewers in prime time with ‘Idol’ contributing 7.365 million viewers over two hours (+89.6% increase) vs 2.914 million viewers for the same two hours in 2017. ‘American Idol’ did that. It increased the networks average +89.5% vs SD 2017. Then on Monday, it badly hurt the viewership of the dominant singing show, ‘The Voice’, as NBC’s time period dropped nearly 1 million viewers vs SD 2017. And once again, it finished as solid #2. Together, ABC has gained substantial ground and immeasurable respect as a contending network it DID NOT have last year. ABC finished up nearly one and on-half million viewers ahead over the two days, +1.419 vs same period 2017.
