This weekend in 1942, ‘White Christmas‘ Bing Crosby with the Ken Darby Singers and John Scott Trotter and His Orchestra was the #1 record. This was the second of eleven weeks at #1. It was first seen in Holiday Inn (1942), with Martha Mears (vocal dubbed over the actress Marjorie Reynolds). It was written by Irving Berlin. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. The original recorded version follows:

The latest social media stats include this: Americans spend 25% of their time on social media.YouTube has viewers now watch 1 billion hours of video each day. 85% of digital video viewers will be YouTube viewers as daily usage of YouTube, is estimated the video-sharing platform will reach 185.9 million monthly US users in 2017 Facebook having 2.047 billion monthly users watching 8 billion videos each day. WhatsApp Panic Hits After Messaging App Suffers Worldwide Outage. WhatsApp went down for users across the globe on Friday morning, causing irate users to flood to other forms of social media to complain. The messaging service failed at around 8.30A, showing just a buffering wheel and a “connecting” message when users tried to get online.
#Whatsappdown became the top trending phrase on Twitter in the UK, while other countries hit included Russia, South Africa, parts of India, Malaysia, Spain and Germany, according to Downdetector.co.uk. Facebook-owned WhatsApp and other messaging services occasionally experience down times and blackouts. In May this year the service crashed for millions of users in the UK, US, Australia and Brazil. The app is currently deploying several updates for users, including the ability to unsend messages for the first time. The ability to delete a message lets users unsend a message within seven minutes of sending was launched across iOS and Android earlier this week.

Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.

Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Today In Communication History

On this date in 1944, in his regular broadcast for CBS radio, Edward R Murrow reports that television development continued in Paris during the Nazi occupation.

Quote Of The Day

‘Paris is to-day a city of rumours. I encountered one rather more credible than the rest-and it turned out to be true. The story was that even during the German occupation one of the great arts of peace-television-had made surprising strides and, while television had more or less stood still in every other belligerent country, it had gone swiftly forward in France. I’ve not myself seen a demonstration of this development, but I have talked with reliable observers who have seen it in Paris, and I have had access to detailed though confidential reports. I don’t know what the Germans have done with television, nor do I know what may be waiting to emerge from the laboratories in the Allied countries, but there has been developed in Paris television in which the picture is clearer and sharper than any that was being transmitted in America or Britain before the war. … it is mildly encouraging to find evidence of progress in the midst of all the dying and destroying that is going on in Europe…’
Edward R. Murrow
