Nearly Half of Social Users Say Platforms Spark Purchases. Study finds Facebook most likely to inspire a purchase decision. Nearly half of US social network users make purchases that begin on social sites, a new study reports, a finding that underscores the increasingly free-form path to purchase. According to an August 2017 survey by visual commerce platform ViSenze, nearly one-third of social users make a purchase that begins on a social site about once a month. Nearly 15% of respondents said they make such purchases more frequently. The survey is the latest to highlight social’s role in consumers’ purchasing decisions. Social platforms have never lived up to hopes that they would be strong drivers of direct sales, but a growing body of evidence makes clear that social touchpoints contribute along the path to purchase. ClickZ, in partnership with Catalyst, polled US digital buyers in August 2017 about the sources that influenced their purchase decisions. According to the survey, social media influenced roughly one-quarter to one-third of respondents’ purchase decisions on items ranging from furniture to baby care. Though social influence fell far short of other options, such as product reviews, the levels were not insignificant. The ViSenze survey asked about purchases that “begin” on social platforms—purchases that could be considered more akin to the original vision of true social commerce. Asked which social platforms were most likely to inspire a purchase decision, respondents scored Facebook considerably higher (31.8%) than Pinterest (16.4%) or Instagram (12.5%). Snapchat, the other option listed, registered below 2%. A recent PwC survey on holiday shopping, which broke down results by age, found somewhat parallel results. In that survey, US internet users ages 22 and older were most likely to cite Facebook as influencing their holiday shopping. But younger shoppers—those ages 13 to 21—cited Instagram as having the most influence. And among these young shoppers, roughly one-third said Snapchat influenced their shopping.

Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.

Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Today In Communication History

On this date in 1951, the ACC football game between North Carolina and Maryland was the last CBS color television transmission. CBS recalls all sets sold to date. On June 25, 1951, the network began color telecasts. In April of ’51, CBS had just taken over the Peace Theater, at 109th Street and 5th Avenue, and in a few quick meetings, it was determined that this would become their Field Sequential color studio. It was big, and empty, but had no air conditioning. CBS called it Studio 57, and moved in five tons of equipment, but there was no time for anything else. That debut show broadcast on this day 65 years ago was simply titled ‘Premiere‘, and it was the first commercial CBS Color program. It, was broadcast over a five station network from New York’s Studio 57, and although there were 10.5 million monochrome sets in U.S., none of them could see it because no Field Sequential sets were made until September of 1951, and less than a month later, production was ordered halted with the Korean War broke out. Appearing on the debut show were Arthur Godfrey, Faye Emerson, Sam Levenson, Ed Sullivan, Gary Moore, Robert Alda, Isabel Bigley, Bil Baird Marionettes, Sol Hurok’s New York City Ballet arranged by George Balanchine, Patty Painter (the first “Miss Color Television”), FCC chairman Wayne Coy, CBS chairman William S. Paley, and CBS president Frank Stanton. Even RCA could not get the CBS system to work without problems on the VHF frequencies…it needed UFH bandwidth to defeat the flicker of the spinning wheel. Part of the battle with RCA and the FCC over color was CBS’s Peter Goldmark’s insistence that the VHF band be abandoned for all color work, and that all black and white broadcasting should be abandoned too…in favor of the CBS Field Sequential system. RCA was leading the way in black and white set manufacturing, and Philco and others were making a market there too, so the CBS push was not gaining any sympathy from the industry, or the FCC. As a matter of fact, the FCC said to CBS, if you are so sure your Field Sequential color system is the ultimate answer, why do you have so many applications for CBS owned VHF stations? Having been asked, now CBS had to answer. It was an answer that cost them dearly too. In a show of support for Goldmark, CBS abandoned five VHF license requests in the top markets…markets they later entered, but at a high price, because they had to buy out the original licensee. CBS was not a manufacturer like RCA and others, and their participation in television depended on their ability to make money with their radio network. The success of the 1948 political conventions on TV, which was mostly pooled, had demonstrated the power of the new visual media, and they didn’t want to get left behind in TV, but it was expensive and had to be developed in every way. The CBS color project was halted at the start of the Korean War in October, 1951.

Quote Of The Day

‘Abandoning this all-electronic approach for CBS’s whirling disc would set back the cause of our technology by a generation.’

Netflix Surges Past 100M Paid Memberships, Now Has More Internationally Than in the US

Netflix’s international business has overtaken its domestic one for the first time in paid membership, according to the streaming giant’s latest earnings report. The subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service added almost 5 million paid members during the third quarter, roughly 80% of which (almost 4 million) were outside the US. That vaulted the international paid membership base past the 50 million mark to almost 52.7 million, ahead of the US paid member count of 51.35 million. In combination, Netflix now has more than 104 million paying members worldwide, up from just over 99 million during the previous quarter. To give an idea as to how quickly Netflix’s international business is growing:
Paid memberships outside the US have more than doubled in just 2 years, since Q3 2015; while In the US, it has taken almost 5 years for Netflix to double its paid member count. Also as part of its earnings report, Netflix revealed that it plans to spend $7-8 billion on content next year, which would be at least $1 billion more than this year’s spending. The company sees its growth coming from exclusive original content, which now accounts for one-quarter of all content spending.

Univison is no longer on Verison Fios

At 5P today, Verizon pulled Univision’s signal from both its Fios and mobile platforms as contract extension talks stalled.
“Verizon chose to take this unprecedented action despite Univision’s offer of an extension of the current agreement,” the company said in a statement. Fios has about 5 million subscribers. But, as with other operators, it is losing video subscribers–15,000 in the most recent quarter. “We urge Verizon to put Univision back on and come back to the negotiating table and prove its commitment to the Hispanic community and show that it understands the value of Spanish-language programming,” the Univision statement continues. Fios had added two Caribbean TV channels–WAPA America and Televisión Dominicana–to the service for ongoing coverage of Hurricane Maria, but that special service ended today.
