The latest social media stats include this: Americans spend 25% of their time on social media.YouTube has viewers now watch 1 billion hours of video each day. 85% of digital video viewers will be YouTube viewers as daily usage of YouTube, is estimated the video-sharing platform will reach 185.9 million monthly US users in 2017 Facebook having 2.047 billion monthly users watching 8 billion videos each day. In addition, 81% of all shares come from Facebook. 41% of Millennials use Facebook every day. And, there are now 5 million active advertisers on its platform, up from 4 million in September 2016 and 2 million in February 2015. Instagram has 700 million users of which 250 million are daily users. 88% of Twitter users are on mobile. An average of 500 million tweets are sent every day with 320 million active users. Twitter had 9 million new members sign up in Q1 2017. The Google+1 button is hit 5 billion times per day. 80% of Internet users on Pinterest are female. Eighty-one percent of US consumers use Facebook regularly, compared with Google (79%), Twitter (43%) and Instagram (40%), System1 Research reported.

Pinterest has 110 million monthly active users. LinkedIn has 347 million registered members with 100 million active users. Tumblr has 555 million users and Weibo has 100 million daily users. Skype has 300 milllion active users and there are 1.000 billion users on Whatsapp. With 900 million active users on Facebook Messenger, 60 billion messages are sent via Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp every day, each with over 1 billion daily users. Netflix now has 75 million streaming subscribers. QQ has 853 million active users. WeChat has 697 million active users while QZone has 640 million. Baidu Tieba has 300 million active users while Viber has 249 million. Sina Weibo has 222 million active users while Line has 215 million. Snapchat has 200 million users and 150 million users are active each day, watching 10 billion videos each day. YY has 122 million active users; VKontakte has 100 million active users as does BBM and Telegram.

LinkedIn tests video ads as sponsored content. According to John Glenday writing in The Drum, ‘Professional network LinkedIn is mounting a belated push into video advertising having arrived late to the video sharing party, only offering members the ability to upload videos as recently as August. As a distant speck on the rear mirror of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and the like LinkedIn has plenty of catching-up to do if it wants to persuade advertisers that it is a serious competitor in the autoplay video ad market. Now owned by Microsoft the platform is doubling down on efforts to monetise its offering, with video content being particularly effective in this regard, being some 20 times more popular than other types of post and correspondingly lucrative. Marci Dobrow, SVP of advertising at digital agency HYFN commented: “LinkedIn is the outlet for B2B and luxury brands to hit a very targeted audience, which can be a great strategy for any applicable client. And LinkedIn, specifically, is ripe for video— today’s audiences, whether they are B2B or in the market for a luxury car or technology, want something more tactile than just a static image. “We, as the consumer, all make better and quicker decisions, big and small, when we feel like we are seeing, touching, feeling…that thing we want and/or need. Consumers in general want more brand storytelling, when making a decision to purchase a product or service, we want to know the narrative. That is what gives consumers confidence that they are making the right choices.” Unusually for a social network advertising accounts for just 18% of LinkedIn’s revenue with the lion’s share of income derived from subscriptions and recruitment. Last month LinkedIn rolled out native video functionality for the first time.’

Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.

Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Today In Communication History

On this date 1943, The Radio Corporation of America finalized the sale of the NBC Blue radio network. Edward J. Noble (President of Life Savers) paid $8 million for the network that was renamed American Broadcasting Company. That was equivalent to $113,195,838.15 in 2017. It formed the base from which ABC Television Network is today.

Quote Of The Day

“As far back as 1932, a group of executives of the National Broadcasting Company conceived the idea that The Blue Network could progress faster and serve its stations, its advertisers and the listening public much better if, instead of being a part of NBC it were to become an independent network.”
