Today In Communication History
On this date 1928, WRNY in Coytesville, NJ, became the first standard radio station to transmit a television image (the face of Mrs. John Geloso). It was a 1.5 square inch image enlarged by a magnifying glass to three inches so it could be viewed by 500 people at Philosophy Hall at New York University. Station also operated W2XAL New York, 9.705 MHz. (WRNY broadcast sight and sound alternately rather than simultaneously. Viewers would first see the face of a performer and a few seconds later would hear the voice. The performances took place for 5 minutes every hour and were designed to lure the radio audience into buying ‘televisor’ sets from Pilot Electric Co. The Pilot Electric Co. was owned by Mr. John Geloso, his wife’s image was the first picture seen over radio.
This was quite a year for television. On January 13, 1928, Dr. Ernst Frederik Werner Alexanderson performs the first successful public television broadcast. The pictures, with 48 lines at 16 frames per second, were received on sets with 1.5 sq. inch screens in the homes of four General Electric executives in Schenectady, New York. The sound was transmitted by the WGY radio station.
On February 9th, John Logie Baird transmits television pictures across the Atlantic. The pictures are transmitted from Motograph House, London by telephone cable to Ben Clapp’s station GK2Z at 40 Warwick Road, Coulsdon, Surrey, and then by radio to Hartsdale, New York, United States.
On June 12th, The first outside broadcast is made by John Logie Baird on his roof in 133 Long Acre, London, featuring the actor Jack Buchanan.
On July 2, 1928, Charles Francis Jenkins begins thrice-weekly television broadcasts in Washington, D.C., transmitting silhouette motion pictures.
On July 3, 1928, John Logie Baird demonstrates a colour television system achieved by using a scanning disc with spirals of red, green and blue filters at the transmitting and receiving ends.
On August 14, 1928, Hugo Gernsback’s New York City radio station begins a regular, if limited, schedule of live television broadcasts, using a mechanical system developed by a South-American inventor. It transmits 48-line images.
September 1, 1928, Philo Farnsworth demonstrates his image dissector camera and “oscillite” tube receiver for the press, with the transmission of motion picture clips, described by a reporter as “a queer looking little image in bluish light now, one that frequently smudges and blurs.” It is the first public demonstration of an all-electronic television system.
Quote Of The Day
‘a queer looking little image in bluish light now, one that frequently smudges and blurs.’

Media Research
The Average TV Show’s Millennial Audience Is 8% Bigger Than We Thought
Nielsen recently began measuring out-of-home (OOH) TV viewing, which takes place in areas such as airports, bars, and gyms. The research firm has now released some figures related to such viewing, finding that it provides a disproportionately large lift to TV programs’ young audiences. Overall, Nielsen reports that almost 60% of OOH viewing impressions come from core buying demographics. People ages 18-34 comprise more than one-quarter (26%) of impressions, while those aged 35-54 and 55+ each add another third (32%).
While the 18-34 group isn’t the most heavily represented among OOH viewers, the addition of these viewers results in a greater audience lift from in-home viewing for this bracket than for any other. Specifically, adding OOH viewing to the equation results in an 8% lift in broadcast and cable programs’ 18-34-year-old audiences. That’s greater than the lift in the 35-54 (5%) and 55+ (3%) audiences, as well as for kids ages 6-17 (+5%).
OOH Contributes Almost Double-Digit Increase in Sports Event Audiences
In analyzing the genres that are watched the most out of the home, Nielsen found that Sports Events lead not only in percentage lift but also in time spent. Beyond the 30-odd hours already spent on sports events, viewers watched in excess of 2-and-a-half hours of sports events outside of the home during the January-May period. The resultant 9% lift from in-home viewership for sports events was matched only by “Audience Participation” shows. However, viewers spent only an additional quarter-hour or so watching this type of programming out of the home.
Finally, viewers also watch a good deal of news programming outside of the home, clocking in at more than 2 hours extra (for a 3% lift). Nielsen points to James Comey’s recent testimony as an example, noting that ratings for the 18-49 demo were up by 11% for broadcast airings and by 17% for cable airings when factoring in out-of-home audiences. All told, while an 8% bump among Millennials isn’t enough to offset the large declines in TV viewership among younger Americans, it’s nonetheless significant and something advertisers will no doubt be happy to be learning of.
