Bobby Jones made some of his greatest contributions, even though he wasn’t playing. The U.S. Open was canceled in 1917 when the United States entered World War I. Jones was a teenage golf prodigy, and he spent two years touring the country for exhibitions that helped raise $150,000 for the American Red Cross, equal to $2,865,515.62 today. The U.S. Open resumed in 1919 and was won by Walter Hagen. Four years later, Jones would win his first of four U.S. Opens.

This Weekend in 1942, ‘The Big Shot‘ was directed by Lewis Seiler, and starring Humphrey Bogart and Irene Manning. One of Bogart’s lesser known films, it is the last time he would play a gangster.
This weekend in 1942, ‘Tangerine‘ Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra with Bob Eberly and Helen O’Connell. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was published in 1941 and soon became a jazz standard. The recording was released by Decca Records as catalog number 4123. The record first reached the Billboard charts on April 10, 1942, and lasted 15 weeks on the chart, including six weeks at #1. This marked the 4th week at #1 in 1942. The lyrics in this version differ slightly from those in the movie. On the record, Eberly sings “And I’ve seen toasts to Tangerine / Raised in every bar across the Argentine,” the lyric that became standard. In the movie at that point, the line is “And I’ve seen times when Tangerine / Had the bourgeoisie believing she were queen.”
75 years ago (1942): Ben Hogan won what some consider to be his first U.S. Open, except that it wasn’t a U.S. Open. War interrupted the U.S. Open for the second time, this one lasting four years. The USGA, PGA of America and Chicago District Golf Association put on the “Hale America Open” as a substitute and to raise money for the USO and Navy Relief Society. Hogan, the winner by three shots over Jimmy Demaret, won a gold medal and $1,200 in war bonds. Just like the U.S. Open, there was local and sectional qualifying across the country.

Twitter has introduced a simpler design to its platform, mobile apps and TweetDeck, and iOS in-app browsers will now open with Apple’s Safari View Controller, which allows consumers to block tracking cookies and ads. The redesign includes round profile photos, a speech bubble icon for replies and section headers displayed in bolder type. Over the course of the “coming days and weeks,” the company said, it will begin rolling out a series of updates that will change not only the settings on people’s profiles, but also the way they engage with the platform as a whole. Some of the design tweaks seem to be inspired by Instagram. This includes the profile pictures, which are now round across all of Twitter’s apps and streams. Twitter also replaced its reply arrow with a speech bubble, something that’s familiar to anyone who has ever used Instagram. The “like,” “retweet” and “reply” icons all received makeovers. Overall, Twitter said it will have fewer tabs at the bottom of its app and has redesigned its icons to be more intuitive. On Twitter for iOS, Twitter for Android and TweetDeck, tweets will be updated instantly if someone replies, retweets or likes it.
Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.
Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Today In Communication History
On this date in 1945, William Joyce (Lord Haw-Haw)Lord Haw-Haw (William Joyce) is arrested and charged with treason for making pro-Nazi broadcasts to Britain during the war. He is retained in Hamburg while the English law on treason is amended to allow prosecution of persons of Irish descent, Joyce having been born in New York of Irish parentage before the creation of the Irish Free State.
Quote Of The Day
It was not only in Britain or the countries of her allies that people hung on Churchill’s words. I was told recently by a German broadcasting official who worked at Hamburg during the war that he walked into the offices one night and found normal work at a standstill. Even William Joyce, then in the full foul flood of his radio oratory as “Haw Haw,” was away from his desk. Asking what was up, the official was told to be quiet—“Churchill’s broadcasting.”
