This Weekend in 1942, ‘Mrs Miniver‘ was directed by William Wyler, and starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. According to box office records the film was produced with a budget of $1.34 million. The film exceeded all expectations, grossing $5,358,000 in the US and Canada (the highest for any MGM film at the time) and $3,520,000 abroad. In the United Kingdom, it was named the top box office attraction of 1942. The initial theatrical release made MGM a profit of $4,831,000, their most profitable film of the year. Mrs. Miniver won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (William Wyler), Best Actress (Greer Garson), and Best Supporting Actress (Teresa Wright). The film was ranked number 40 on the American Film Institute’s list celebrating the most inspirational films of all time.

This weekend in 1942, ‘Tangerine‘ Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra with Bob Eberly and Helen O’Connell. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was published in 1941 and soon became a jazz standard. The recording was released by Decca Records as catalog number 4123. The record first reached the Billboard charts on April 10, 1942, and lasted 15 weeks on the chart, including six weeks at #1. This marked the 4th week at #1 in 1942. The lyrics in this version differ slightly from those in the movie. On the record, Eberly sings “And I’ve seen toasts to Tangerine / Raised in every bar across the Argentine,” the lyric that became standard. In the movie at that point, the line is “And I’ve seen times when Tangerine / Had the bourgeoisie believing she were queen.”

Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.

Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Today In Communication History

On this date 1948, Milton Berle hosted ‘Texaco Star Theater’ NBC-TV. It was the show’s debut.

Quote Of The Day

‘I’d rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I’d rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are.’
Milton Berle

Social Media Research

64% Of Consumers Say Watching A Marketing Video On Facebook Influenced Purchase Decision In The Last Month
Every day, hundreds of millions of people watch video on Facebook and new findings suggest a majority make time for branded fare. In an article written by Gavin O’Malley in Digital News Daily (060617), 60% of Facebook users say they view at least one branded video a day, according to Animoto. More notable, 64% of consumers say watching a marketing video on Facebook has influenced a purchase decision in the last month. In response to this receptivity, brands are diving into social video. Among those marketers surveyed by Animoto, nearly half say they are presently publishing four or more videos per month.

Plus, 92% of marketers say they are repurposing assets they already have for video creation. ‘Businesses need to learn to ‘speak video’ fluently if they want to connect with their customers on social media’, Brad Jefferson, CEO of Animoto, notes in the new report.

In February, Facebook reported 1.74 billion mobile monthly active users. According to Animoto’s research, 84% of consumers say they watch social video content on mobile devices, while 81% of marketers say they optimize their social videos for mobile, which includes things like planning for sound-off viewing.

Some 1,000 consumers and 500 marketers already in the business of putting out social video were surveyed for the report. While the marketplace continues to evolve, YouTube and Facebook still dominate in terms of video viewership numbers.

TV Review

Apple Fails.

‘Planet Of The Apps’
If you have all the money in the world and you want to become a broadcast network because you are everything that Jobs created, the first thing you do is create a program, as your first entry into entertainment, called ‘Planet Of The Apps’.

Holy Shit! You failed.

Now, get back into your geek box somewhere and let the adults on the planet create, write and produce a program that is of interest.

For those in broadcast and cable who are in charge of programming, you need not worry about Apple’s first amateur try. Only the Silicon Valley folks are giggling as their glasses get fogged over.
