This Weekend in 1942, ‘Mrs Miniver‘ was directed by William Wyler, and starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. According to box office records the film was produced with a budget of $1.34 million. The film exceeded all expectations, grossing $5,358,000 in the US and Canada (the highest for any MGM film at the time) and $3,520,000 abroad. In the United Kingdom, it was named the top box office attraction of 1942. The initial theatrical release made MGM a profit of $4,831,000, their most profitable film of the year. Mrs. Miniver won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (William Wyler), Best Actress (Greer Garson), and Best Supporting Actress (Teresa Wright). The film was ranked number 40 on the American Film Institute’s list celebrating the most inspirational films of all time.

This weekend in 1942, ‘Tangerine‘ Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra with Bob Eberly and Helen O’Connell. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was published in 1941 and soon became a jazz standard. The recording was released by Decca Records as catalog number 4123. The record first reached the Billboard charts on April 10, 1942, and lasted 15 weeks on the chart, including six weeks at #1. This marked the 4th week at #1 in 1942. The lyrics in this version differ slightly from those in the movie. On the record, Eberly sings “And I’ve seen toasts to Tangerine / Raised in every bar across the Argentine,” the lyric that became standard. In the movie at that point, the line is “And I’ve seen times when Tangerine / Had the bourgeoisie believing she were queen.”

The latest social media stats include this: Americans spend 25% of their time on social media.YouTube has viewers now watch 1 billion hours of video each day. 85% of digital video viewers will be YouTube viewers as daily usage of YouTube, is estimated the video-sharing platform will reach 185.9 million monthly US users in 2017 Facebook having 1.79 billion monthly users watching 8 billion videos each day. And, there are now 5 million active advertisers on its platform, up from 4 million in September 2016 and 2 million in February 2015. Instagram has 500 million users. 88% of Twitter users are on mobile. An average of 500 million tweets are sent every day with 320 million active users. Twitter had 9 million new members sign up in Q1 2017. The Google+1 button is hit 5 billion times per day. 80% of Internet users on Pinterest are female.

YY has 122 million active users; VKontakte has 100 million active users as does BBM and Telegram.

A NEW study revealed that consumers exposed to both Facebook and TV ads are 29% more likely to make a purchase, up from an estimation of 22%. While TV had a 4.7 times larger household reach, Facebook’s effective reach cost 1.9 times less. The study was released by Kantar. It builds on a study it published last year with Nielsen which found that Facebook could help advertisers reach an additional 5% of people they would have otherwise missed had they purchased media space on TV only. After accounting for campaign spend, Facebook had an average 1.9X cheaper cost of reach.

Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.

Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.
