Pirates of the Caribbean‘ #1 at the International box office weekend 26-28 May 2017. Complete box office this weekend listed below.

This Weekend in 1942, ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy‘ was directed by Michael Curtiz and starring James Cagney, Joan Leslie, Walter Huston, and Richard Whorf, and features Irene Manning, George Tobias, Rosemary DeCamp, Jeanne Cagney, and Vera Lewis. According to box office records the film earned $11,800,000 at the box office. This made it the biggest box office success in the company’s history up to that time. It finished as the #2 movie of the year. The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (James Cagney), Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture and Best Sound, Recording (Nathan Levinson). It was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Walter Huston), Best Director, Best Film Editing for George Amy, Best Picture and Best Writing, Original Story. In 1993, Yankee Doodle Dandy was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

This weekend in 1942, ‘Tangerine‘ Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra with Bob Eberly and Helen O’Connell. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was published in 1941 and soon became a jazz standard. The recording was released by Decca Records as catalog number 4123. The record first reached the Billboard charts on April 10, 1942, and lasted 15 weeks on the chart, including six weeks at #1. This marked the 4th week at #1 in 1942. The lyrics in this version differ slightly from those in the movie. On the record, Eberly sings “And I’ve seen toasts to Tangerine / Raised in every bar across the Argentine,” the lyric that became standard. In the movie at that point, the line is “And I’ve seen times when Tangerine / Had the bourgeoisie believing she were queen.”

The latest social media stats include this: Americans spend 25% of their time on social media.YouTube has viewers now watch 1 billion hours of video each day. 85% of digital video viewers will be YouTube viewers as daily usage of YouTube, is estimated the video-sharing platform will reach 185.9 million monthly US users in 2017 Facebook having 1.79 billion monthly users watching 8 billion videos each day. In addition, 81% of all shares come from Facebook. 41% of Millennials use Facebook every day. And, there are now 5 million active advertisers on its platform, up from 4 million in September 2016 and 2 million in February 2015. Instagram has 500 million users. 88% of Twitter users are on mobile. An average of 500 million tweets are sent every day with 320 million active users. Twitter had 9 million new members sign up in Q1 2017. The Google+1 button is hit 5 billion times per day. 80% of Internet users on Pinterest are female.

Pinterest has 110 million monthly active users. LinkedIn has 347 million registered members with 100 million active users. Tumblr has 555 million users and Weibo has 100 million daily users. Skype has 300 milllion active users and there are 1.000 billion users on Whatsapp. With 900 million active users on Facebook Messenger, 60 billion messages are sent via Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp every day. Netflix now has 75 million streaming subscribers. QQ has 853 million active users. WeChat has 697 million active users while QZone has 640 million. Baidu Tieba has 300 million active users while Viber has 249 million. Sina Weibo has 222 million active users while Line has 215 million. Snapchat has 200 million users and 150 million users are active each day, watching 10 billion videos each day. YY has 122 million active users; VKontakte has 100 million active users as does BBM and Telegram.

Google is bringing location extensions, which trace the offline effect of digital ad exposures, to YouTube. Ads on the video platform will soon include address or map location data, hours, photos, call buttons and other tracking data. Store visits measurement will also be available soon for YouTube campaigns. Beyond store visits analytics, Google is expanding in-store sales measurement, which it has been testing since 2014. Facebook introduced offline sales measurement in 2013. The latter requires the advertiser to send hashed transaction data back to Facebook for matching on the back end. There are two levels to Google’s in-store sales measurement. The more basic level will report on the in-store sales impact of AdWords campaigns without any back-end integration on the part of the advertiser. Google does this by comparing store visits using smartphone data with credit card transactions in the aggregate. In this way the company can determine whether, during some conversion window, online ads generated an incremental sales lift (in addition to visits). Those that have customer loyalty and email data can “import store transactions directly into AdWords” and get much more detail about the ad impact on product level sales in stores. This is similar to the Facebook methodology and also involves hashed data matched on the back end. Google stressed that all of this was being done in a privacy-compliant way.

Remember, social media marketing isn’t always the tech. It’s the people.

Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Kelly Kahl Named New President of Entertainment for CBS
CBS is overhauling its leadership ranks, promoting veteran scheduling chief Kelly Kahl to president of CBS Entertainment, and bringing on longtime creative executive Thom Sherman to oversee programming for America’s most popular television network. Kahl has been a stalwart of CBS Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Leslie Moonves’ inner circle for more than two decades, and has been instrumental in the network’s success.

He will replace Glenn Geller, who had a mild heart attack in mid-March as CBS was preparing its slate of pilots. CBS announced that Geller, who has since been on medical leave, was stepping down as entertainment president after about 18 months. He probably will segue to a producer role.

Tuesday’s shake-up was telegraphed earlier this month as Kahl took a turn on the stage at Carnegie Hall in New York to promote CBS’ new fall schedule to advertisers. Kahl, 50, will manage the the network’s daily operations.

As a student at USC in 1990, Kahl worked for Moonves as an intern at Lorimar Television. The Wisconsin native then followed Moonves to Warner Bros. television studio, which Moonves ran in the mid-1990s.n“Kelly was there with me in the trenches when we had to convince NBC that ‘ER’ was going to be a hit show,” Moonves said in an interview. “We’ve been through a lot together.” Kahl, who joined CBS in 1996, was the architect of key scheduling moves that catapulted “CSI,” “Survivor,” “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “The Big Bang Theory” to huge ratings.

CBS ended the most recent TV season in first place with an average of 9.65 million viewers a night, more than 1.5 million viewers ahead of second-place NBC. But CBS has struggled to launch a breakthrough hit in the last few seasons. Its most recent hits, “Bull” and “Life in Pieces,” have generated large audiences, but not the buzz of NBC’s breakout hit “This Is Us,” ABC’s “black-ish” or even “The Big Bang Theory,” which CBS launched 10 years ago. The median age of CBS’ audience now is 60, according to Nielsen data, putting pressure on the network to develop shows that resonate with younger audiences and advertisers.

In recent years, Kahl has dabbled in film, executive producing three independent features, the first two of which have premiered on Lifetime. His 2014 foray ‘Return to Zero‘ went to Lifetime after a launch at the Rome International Film Festival, becoming the cable network’s first simultaneous international release. It went on to score a WGA Awards nomination for Original Long Form and an Emmy nom for lead Minnie Driver. 2016’s ‘Sister Cities‘, also from director Sean Hanish, followed and Michelle Monaghan, Alfred Molina, Peter Krause, Alfre Woodard and Common recently joined their third collaboration, ‘Saint Judy‘.

Scott Pelley Out As CBS Evening News Anchor
Ratings are everything in television and Scott Pelley could not pull up the ratings for CBS after 6 years trying. Now he is out and will continue on ’60 Minutes’, as he has been a part of for some time. CBS News Senior National Correspondent Anthony Mason to take over for Scott Pelley as anchor of CBS Evening News, for now. CBS Evening News continues to run third among network evening newscasts in both total viewers and the news demo, behind NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir.

Pelley was a conspicuous no-show at CBS’ upfront presentation to media buyers at Carnegie Hall last week. The Eye network traditionally plugs its news programs during its presentation, but this year made no mention of Pelley or his evening newscast, instead focusing CBS This Morning, with hosts Charlie Rose, Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell chatting onstage.
