‘The Fate of the Furious‘ #1 at the International box office weekend 14-16 April 2017. Complete box office this weekend listed below.
This Weekend in 1942, ‘Saboteur‘ was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Robert Cummings, Priscilla Lane, Otto Kruger and Norman Lloyd. Saboteur did “very well at the box office as it made a “tidy profit for all involved finishing with $1.250,000 at the Box office ($18,681,211.66 in 2017 dollars).” Bosley Crowther of The New York Times called the film, “(a)… swift, high-tension film which throws itself forward so rapidly that it permits slight opportunity for looking back. And it hurtles the holes and bumps which plague it with a speed that forcefully tries to cover them up.” Crowther noted that “so abundant [are] the breathless events that one might forget, in the hubbub, that there is no logic in this wild-goose chase”; he also questioned the “casual presentation of the FBI as a bunch of bungling dolts, [the film’s] general disregard of authorized agents, and [its] slur on the navy yard police”, all of which “somewhat vitiates the patriotic implications which they have tried to emphasize in the film.” Time magazine called Saboteur “… one hour and 45 minutes of almost simon-pure melodrama from the hand of the master”; the film’s “artful touches serve another purpose which is only incidental to Saboteur’s melodramatic intent. They warn Americans, as Hollywood has so far failed to do, that fifth columnists can be outwardly clean and patriotic citizens, just like themselves.”
This weekend in 1942, ‘Moonlight Cocktail‘ Glenn Miller and His Orchestra with Ray Eberle and the Modernaires was #1 record on Billboard. It was #1 for ten (10) straight weeks. The music was composed by Luckey Roberts with lyrics by Kim Gannon. The song was originally recorded by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra on December 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The song had its first public performance in January 1942 on KABC radio in New York City. The 78 rpm disc was released by Bluebird Records as #11401. Vocals were by Ray Eberle and The Modernaires. “Happy in Love” was on the B-side. It was the best-selling record in the United States for ten weeks, from February 28, 1942 to May 2, 1942, and was the number two record for that year after Bing Crosby’s White Christmas.

Social Thought
With desktop engagement faltering in recent years, it has lost share to mobile, which now accounts for 69% of digital media time spent.
Today, traditional TV still accounts for the lion’s share of video viewing, but online and mobile are where the growth is. When managed together, TV/digital/mobile hold the potential to drive real impact for advertisers—enabling them to maximize the customers they reach and/or reinforce key messaging across screens. After all, ‘It’s all about screens’.

Today in Communication History
On this date in 1940, W2XBS-TV televises a circus from Madison Square Garden.
On this date in 1941, US government’s War Production Board orders a 70 per cent reduction in the use of shellac—mainly imported from India—for non-military purposes, seriously affecting the production of audio discs.
On this date in 1948, Bing Crosby’s 27th radio show of the 1947/48 season is recorded on the first two audio tape recorders, Model 200A serial #1 and #2, delivered by Ampex to Bing Crosby Enterprises. From now on all Crosby radio programmes for the ABC network are pre-recorded on tape (having hitherto been recorded—’transcribed’—on disc). When Ampex demonstrates a tape of a pilot Crosby recorded programme, ABC orders 12 recorders at $4,000 each. The live shows are allowed to overrun so that weaker parts can be edited out; rehearsal recordings are also spliced in and at an early stage laughter from one show is saved to incorporate in later shows where the audience reaction is less than wholly enthusiastic.
Quote Of The Day
‘We’d dub the one that came off best into the final transcription. It gave us a chance to ad lib as much as we wanted, knowing that excess ad libbing could be sliced from the final product.’
