Today In Communication History
On this date in 1941, WNBT-TV in New York City, NY, was granted the first construction permit to operate a commercial TV station in the U.S.
NOTE: We have entered a new era in screen ratings. Nielsen is expanding its sample of TV viewers to include new
homes with meters that record the channel being watched—but not the demographics of the people watching. That will be estimated using data modeling and an algorithm Nielsen has developed, and added to the current sample that does include people meters that measure demos. The Panel Expansion (NPX), in which 12,900 households have been added to the national sample, is at the center of this change. The household ratings in these homes are measured by meters on each television in the home, while the demographic ratings in these homes will be assigned by Nielsen using a statistical algorithm. This is the first time since 1987 that homes in the national sample are not equipped with PeopleMeters, which measure both the program viewed and the people watching it.
So?
In 1900, the term ‘television‘ is coined by Constantin Perskyi at the International Electricity Congress, part of the 1900 Paris Exhibition.

Digital/Mobile Research
Mobile Devices Continue To Dominate News Consumption
Mobile visitors continue to outpace those from desktops for news sites, according to a study out Wednesday. A Pew Research Center report found that significantly more traffic for 99 of 110 news organizations surveyed came from mobile, as opposed to desktop, devices. That was up from 71 in the fourth quarter of 2014.
The rise was true across categories, including newspapers and news magazines. The number of newspapers saw their mobile traffic outpace their desktop traffic increase from 28 in 2014 to 44 in 2015. All eight national television outlets studied now receive a majority of their web traffic from mobile devices. Pew found that every digital news outlet they studied was on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Most used Instagram and half were on Snapchat.
The rise of smartphones has been transformative for the news business. It has forced them to rethink their digital presence not just for smartphones but for the many social media platforms their audience members use to access news on their phones.
The rapid rise in smartphone use has driven policymakers to look to free up more spectrum, the frequencies mobile devices use to transmit and download data, to meet the demand.
The Pew researchers based their traffic analysis on data from ComScore, a popular tool for measuring web traffic. The measurements were based on data from October 2015 through December 2015.
Social Media Research
Female Users Account for Two-Thirds of Instagram’s US Daily Audience
More than one in four people in the US will use Instagram regularly this year, making it the second most popular social network in the country after Facebook. According to recent research, women are more active than men on Instagram and prefer the platform more than other social networks for engaging with brand content.
