CBS Wins Saturday. BBC One #1 In The UK. It Looks Like A Pattern In Holiday Viewing.

In one of the slowest nights of the year, this Saturday between Christmas and New Year’s day, saw CBS pull out another victory on broadcast behind their always powerful news magazine, ’48 Hours’. At 8P, ‘Mike & Molly’ rerun drew 2.24 million while at 830P, ‘Mom’ brought in 2.4 million. Then at 9P, ’48 Hours’ with an original episode, drew an evening high of 3.83 million and again at 10P, it led with 3.2 million viewers.

ABC came close but ‘no cigar’ on this Saturday. While its sister, ESPN, had football bowl games all evening long, including the Michigan loss to Kansas State in the Buffalo Wings Bowl in Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, at 8P ‘Just Go with It’ pulled in 3.78 million, beating everything except ’48 Hours’. At 1030P, a rerun of ‘Trophy Wife’ lost it for The Alphabet Network with only 2.07 million. If and buts were candy and nuts…

NBC had ‘WWE Tribute To The Troops’ special at 8P and pulled in 2.31 million. at 9P, ‘The Blacklist’ rerun pulled in 1.85 million and at 10P, a rerun of ‘Saturday Night Live’ drew a network high for the evening with 2.96 million viewers. The Peacock Network threw this night away.

FOX just didn’t compete either. A rerun of ‘Almost Human’ pulled in a remarkable 2.54 million, good for #3 in its time slot. But a rerun of ‘Bones’ could only bring in 1.85 million viewers. The Animal Network of Broadcast threw this night away.

Question: With a bunch of football bowl games on the agenda, why didn’t NBC or FOX pull off a deal with one of them (Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium with Notre Dame vs Rutgers or the above mentioned Buffalo Wings Bowl) and run it on prime time? It doesn’t take that much to make a crack in a bowl…especially a lower echelon bowl.

For the record, CBS was #1 again with 3.971 million, 420,000 above last season, while ABC finished second with 3.484 million, some 800,000 viewers ahead of last season on this comparable day. NBC was next with 2.311 million, some 960,000 viewers LESS than last year on this day while FOX finished with 1.933 million, 760,000 viewers BELOW last year.
